CAR REGISTRATION, What year is it?

Question

Simple question, I'm young dont really understand about cars, I'm about to buy my first car. Can anyone explain how you know what year a car is by looking at the number plate? Thanks.

New reg plates are 51  = 2001, 52 = 2002 etc. Olg reg plates like Y reg will be from 1999/2000 and so on.....

for example this year. any car between march and august is an 08 plate. any care made between august and march is a 58 plate

where do you live might help  i.e uk, usa, egypt?

Before 2000 its on letters of the alpha bet, e.g nearer the begining of the alpha bet = older i.e A = very old, Y = not so old.

After 2000 its done by numbers, 00/50 = 2000

01/51 = 2001

02/52 = 2002

etc.

You will be able to find out the year of registration on a v5 registration logbook.  If you find a nice car you will be able to ask the salesperson to see the logbook.  

The new reg's came in  September 2001- this was the 51 plate and then in March 2002 the 02 plate was introduced. in September the 52 plate came in and so on.  Hope  this helps.

Example: 06 is March 2006 to August 2006, 56 is September 2006 to April 2007.

If its before this, the months still apply, the numbers only change.

And in the new format like  XX51 x*x  or XX02XXX  the numbers are the year it was made (01 and 51 = 2001) (02 and 52 = 2002) etc.
