CAVB Zonal-phase tournament comes to Kenya – Beach Volleyball News
The race for Olympic slots among various African countries is in full swing as a total of 35 countries from Africa are on board to qualify for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. The Confederation Africane de Volleyball (CAVB) is the organising and commanding
authority, which has been looking after the entire qualification process for African teams. Initially, the procedure started off with sub-zonal tournaments as beach volleyball pairs of both genders were divided into different groups, which appeared in their
respective sub-zonal tournaments. Successful teams advanced to the next stage of the zonal-phases that are currently under way.
After successfully completing two zonal-phase stages in Sierra Leone and Mozambique, the beach volleyball action is now coming to the fabulous shores of the Indian Ocean in Kenya. The Nyali Beach in Mombasa is set to serve as the host of this wonderful campaign,
which is scheduled to run from July 27-29. The tree-day beach volleyball activity in Mombasa will involve Group D teams. The third stop zonal competition in Kenya will have the presence of a bigger number of participating countries in both genders.
In the women’s competition, ten teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda have been registered. The host country of Kenya is playing with four female duos, while the rest of the participating countries will send two teams apiece.
On the other hand, men’s competition will have more participants. A total of 15 men’s pairings from Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda will enter the competition. Kenya will send four teams in the competition and rest of the countries will
be playing with two teams from each country.
Four countries in each gender will earn the rights of playing in the second round of the zonal phase through this tournament. The next round is scheduled to be held in October.
Previously, the CAVB Control Committee and officials of Local Organizing Committee paid a visit to the site for inspection purposes. All arrangements were checked and members of CAVB Control Committee advised the organizers to maintain the best playing conditions
for matches as CAVB wants to make it a successful event.
At the time of inspection, the Director of Beach Volleyball Department of Confederation Africane de Volleyball commented: “I’m happy to see these facilities here in Kenya ahead of the prestigious Olympic Qualifying event. We hope to receive most of the Pool
D countries to compete together at this charming beach in Mombasa.”
