CAVB men’s Continental Cup final to be held in Mauritius – Volleyball news
The African Volleyball Federation has made it official by announcing that Mauritius will play host to the finals of CAVB Beach Volleyball Men's Continental Cup.
According to the set plan of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and African Volleyball governing body (CAVB), the last phase of the Olympic qualifying tournament will take place from April 13-15.
The small fishing town Flic en Flac in Mauritius will set up the field of play for the thrilling competition. Mauritius has recently grabbed worldwide attention, mainly due to the women’s success at the All Africa Games in Mozambique. The Mauritius ladies
seized gold medal in beach volleyball category at the All Africa Games.
A total of eight beach volleyball tandems from all across the African continent will be on board to compete for the ticket to 2012 London Olympic Games, which are coming up in July. The eventual winner of the CAVB Continental Cup final will go straight into
Olympics, whereas the runners-up and third place finishers will get another chance to prove their endeavours at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification tournament in Tortoli, Italy slated for June.
Countries set to take part in the final test of beach volleyball skills in Mauritius include Congo Brazzaville, Algeria, Morocco, Angola, Egypt, South Africa, hosts Mauritius, and Nigeria.
The Olympic Qualification phase started off with the sub-zonal tournaments almost one and half year ago. The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) organised nine tournaments and teams from 35 national federations participated in the competitions. After
the successful completion of sub-zonal stage, the competition entered the zonal-phase with 31 duos. In the first round of zonal-tournaments, 11 teams disqualified and only 20 advanced to the second round.
The second round of zonal tournaments caused elimination for more team and only better duos could survive up till the final round of Continental Cup. Finally, the crucial qualifying phase is going to take place from April 13-15. The top eight men’s pairings
will continue their quest for Olympic Ticket in Mauritius next month.
The women’s finals will be hosted by Rwanda in the month of May. Only one pair from each gender category will advance to the Olympics via Continental Cup finals. Check back for latest updates and news.
