That's the question I have been unable to establish.

What was the purpose?

I am assuming that Russian peace keepers had either formed a partition OR were simply there as a presence, so I don't quite understand what form the Georgian offensive took - and whwther it was against the Russian peace keepers or against the civilians.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

  1. South Ossetia has a standing militia as well as a permanent detachment of Russian peacekeepers. Georgia was recently denied NATO membership and has also recently received military training support and logistical support from the USA and may well have decided they wanted to make a statement to try and show they were worthy of the big boys club, at a time when the world was watching Beijing for the olympics, and they may well have figured that the Russians would simply withdraw. How wrong they were! The tactics they used werent really all that different from the way Hitler worked, when he occupied the Rhineland and the Sudetenland he said he was simply re-claiming territory that had always belonged to Germany and had been stolen at the Versailles treaty. Nobody tried to stop him and look what happened as a result. Thankfully this time somebody was brave enough to stand up to the dictator and Georgia basically got whooped good!!!

  2. is all in connection with the missile defence system being installed in poland , by america

  3. War is this part of the world never seems to be good guys v bad guys, its always bad guys v bad guys, the only thing is to define who is worse. But i know the russians lie, "we dont have any troops in gori, honest", as a bbc journalist films columns of tanks and hidden artillery units. I dont really know about the georgians but you cant believe anything the russians say, plus they are totally incompetant, look at the past 10 years and all the big events that land in the media, kursk submarine, moscow theatre, school seige, all have been handled with a mass of total incompetantance.

  4. Militants (fomented by and including the Russian 'peacekeepers' there) in South Ossetia were attacking the Georgian Gov't and Georgian civilians.  It appears that all this behind the scenes prepping for war was orchestrated by the Russian Gov't - as they were unhappy with Georgia.  Russia wants to:

    * control Georgia's oil transportation/supply routes from the Caspian Sea and thus control ALL of Europe's energy inputs

    * intimidate Georgia into not joining NATO

    * push Georgia from becoming a true democracy on Russia's border

    * punish Georgia for allying with the US

    * move towards re-creating the USSR

    Peace

  5. very simple.

georgians want ossetia to be georgian.

ossetians want ossetia to be ossetian.

they are fighting with each other and dying.

some days ago forced by USA georgians bombed the largest town in ossetia and killed 2000 ossetians. they wanted to capture the city very fast but they failed because of russians.

yes russia has its interests in ossetia. and georgia has. but not russians killed thousands of civilians for this goal achievement. russia has no reason to kill them. they are already citizens of russia. and goverment of ossetia consists of pro-russian people. georgians did it. why? very simple. georgians want live in ossetia. But if they go ossetian town without bombing it before, ossetians will kill them. so they have to kill all ossetians by bombs before enter town. very simple.

Here is what ossetians think about war with georgians:

Here is some interviews with americans lived in ossetia that time:

    p.s.

    My opinion is changing...

I am not sure that georgian bombings were so massive as it says russian TV, but they were serious. I am not sure that 2000 killed are civilians, maybe significant part of them were defenders of city. But I am sure that hundreds civilians are killed by georgians. I heared it from ossetians. They call it georgian gencide of ossetians. This genocide happens for a long time, for tens of years.

  6. Georgia wants to be placed in NATO and US want to place their soldiers in this area permanently.South Osetia's population is 80.000 and just about 20.000 of these people are Georgian-in this war i just blame racist Georgian president Saakashvili.

When Georgia overtook Acaristan area and put a Christian Holy Cross on the flag of this Müslüman territory, Others just kept their silence. In this 5 million populated country there were about 1.000.000 Azer Türk living there and Georgia doesnt give electiricity and water to Azer areas for 3 years-now just 400.000 people stayed cause Azerbaycan or Türkiye doesnt take them anymore-They got used to play the naughty and take whatever you want

I think the problem is when they were researching their national-ethnical history to put a national consciousness they just got stuck in 100 A.D cause non of them sounds like someone from 21th century. Also it must be a good chance for Russia to show some off

  7. People are getting waaay too caught up in the technical status of South Ossetia.  The fact is it is de facto independent from Georgia.

If the PRC invaded Taiwan, what would that be?  Think of Georgia as the PRC and South Ossetia as Taiwan.

As for why Georgia attacked, their President is a blowhard who speaks of democracy but isn't a believer in it.  So he was elected, well so what?  Lots of leaders get elected, holding elections isn't the only factor in determining whether a country is a democracy.  He campaigned on "national reunification", that is forcibly returning these rebellious areas (South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Adjara, Kodori Gorge) to Georgian control.  Milosevic did the same thing and what did the West think of him?

  8. I'm not entirely sure why and I think it's a bit flippant of people here to claim to know why because the truth is that nobody knows other than the Georgian intelligence or the Russian intelligence or the militants in South Ossetia.

However, what stunned me is that they figured Russia wouldn't get involved. If I was in charge of Georgia and noticed that Russia were amassing troops in their land (which they are legally allowed to do), the last thing I'd like to do is invade a territory that is predominately sympathetic to Russia with the majority having Russian citizenship.

I think it's disgusting that Georgia are seen as the 'innocent' in this conflict. Yes, the Russia assault was disproportionate, yes, it was heavy-handed and yes I am sure Russia were not goody-goody-two-shoes in the build up of this conflict but the fact remains that Georgia, despite only agreeing peace terms and a ceasefire with South Ossetia, then launched a major offensive in their territory that has been seperate from Georgia in all but name since 1991.

  9. im 100% sure tht it has to deal with the plans of the us, but wht exactly.. well its probly either the defence thing in poland, or the thing with iran.. if during the next year us does attack iran, then it wud clear everything up :) heard some of the us navy moved in tht direction, tho its just a wild guess lol

for all those smart ones answering here: ossetia was NEVER a part of georgia at all.. ossetia and abkhazia joined ussr BEFORE georgia did. later, when ussr fell apart, north ossetia decided to stay with russia, and south ossetia wanted freedom, i repeat FREEDOM but not being a part of georgia, so from the early 90's there was this confrontation thing, i have no idea why wud georgians think south ossetia had to be a part of their country. got anything from what i've said? dont believe it? check on wikipedia or whatever ur sources might be.. after all.. ur not just blindly eating all tht sht that ur being fed by the news, are u? oh i bet u are tho lol

  10. in the break up of the soviet union ossetia was promised independence like georgia and everyone else got independence. Somehow somebody put forth the proposition that no, georgia wants to keep control of ossetia a little longer. They sat and waited for thier freedom which never came. They declared thier own independence from georgia and georgia murdered 2000 civilians, to supress the "uprising" Russia didn't take too kindly to this and sent in troops to give georgia the ***** slap they deserved.

  11. The Russian Government had massed troops and tanks on the Georgian Border for months in preparation for the invasion of Georgia.

The Russian Government is merely trying to make it appear that the invasion of Georgia was in response to an invasion by Georgia, tha is not the case, however.

The invasion of Georgia by the Russian Government is very similar to the invasion of the Sudetenland by Adolf Hitler.

Adolf Hitler clained that the invasion of the Sudetenland was to protect German Citizens living in the Sudetenland.

The Russian Government said that the invasion of Georgia was to protect Russian Citizens living there.
