Question:

CBR600RR as a beginner bike?

I'm looking to buy my first bike. I rode a dirt bike on a few occasions as a kid, so I'm not a TOTAL newbie, but I'm wondering how the 600RR would suit me. I'm not a thrill seeker and have no interest in what the bike's top speed is if that tells you anything about me. I'm mainly just concerned with my ability to handle the bike. How much power are we talking about?

  1. This is a same question that I've been asking everyone. At least from a SALES person's perspective it's a great bike for all skill levels they told me. In fact, every sales person that I've talked with said it's much safer than KAWASAKI 250 or any bikes under 500 cc because 600 cc has more weight and more power so you can control the bike better. One sales woman said when you 're getting on the freeway or driving in traffic you need you bike to respond to you if you need avoid trouble. In addition, 250 and 500 cc you'll get bored with it. I don't know if it's true but I'm still debating what to get. I want CBR 600rr or Ninja ZX-6R but not new. I'm looking for cheap 600cc under $2000 so I can drop it anytime and not feel bad for the damage.

  2. Look at it from another point of view. If someone was asking you what a good car would be for someone who just got his license and has not other experience than driver's ed class. Would you recommend a Ferrari or a Hyundai?

  3. There is nothing rare about a 600 being a beginner bike. I've been riding 5 years in 3 different states with hundreds of other riders. I've never  rode with, seen, or heard of anybody starting on anything smaller than a 600. If they did, it was because they rode dirtbikes as kids.

The 600 is the beginners sportbike. Getting a 250 is like telling somebody to start with a BB gun when they are interested in a Glock. yes a glock isn't a beginner gun but a 380 is fine.

People saying a 600 isn't a starter bike are being very extreme and aren't reliable opinions.

get an 01 or 02 CBR600RR. Be safe and have fun man!

C'mon people, they guy didn't say he needed to learn how to ride, he said he knows how to ride and has experience to go with a mature mind set. Get off the horse and chill out!

  4. This type of question comes up a lot with new riders... Assuming the bike is in good shape, it probably will do 0-60 in 3 sec (or less) and a 1/4 mile in the 10 sec range.  So... not a very good idea for a beginner.  You would be buying a track weapon that's faster than a Porsche 911.

You might be one of those rare people who's careful enough to be OK with it... but you'd be running against the odds.  9 times out of 10 it's better to get a less powerful used bike:  1) Less likely to scare yourself out of riding or kill yourself and 2) Less financial pain if you do have an "oops", which is almost guaranteed during your first few months of riding.

I would recommend something more like an SV650.  Even that is pushing it somewhat for a beginner, but it's more manageable than the 600RR.

  5. sportbikes should be the last thing  on your mind for a first bike. think honda cb250, rebel 250, kawasaki ninja 250, ninja 500, suzuki gsx 250 or 500. the cbr is a track bike that has blinkers and a license plate. all of the bikes i have listed have comfortable riding positions and are forgiving. if you mess with the bull(cbr) your gonna get the horns. not what you want for your first.
