CBS Films takes on the challenge of Deus Ex: Human Revolution film
Meaning no disrespect to the great movies of yester-years, the Hollywood industry has gotten better than ever, thanks to the availability of state-of-the-art technology and exceptional talent.
However, if there is one thing that the industry has struggled to perfect in so many years is the transfer of a video game franchise to silver screen.
Many studios have put together great teams to undertake the challenge, but they have all ended up with disappoint results, save for a few exceptions such as Mortal Kombat.
Even now, a number of projects involving the feature adaptation of renowned video game franchises are in the process of being planned, finalised and shot.
CBS Films has brought some greats movies to the big screen in the past and therefore earned itself a solid reputation in the industry.
It is hard to determine whether it was the faith in its ability, its desire for adventure or just a reaction to an opportunity that presented itself that led the studio to announce a Deus EX- Human Revolution film earlier this year.
There is no doubt that it is possible to make this project successful, but judging by the fate of the previous attempts that other studios had made to convert a gaming brand to a Hollywood film, it is hard to hold on to one’s optimism.
Published by Square Enix and developed by Eidos Montreal, the action role-playing game (RPG) has been set in a futuristic setting, with the main protagonist Adam Jensen finds himself pushed into a global plot involving espionage, poverty and making humans
more advanced by replacing parts of their body with mechanical parts.
The general theme of the game is without any doubt a compelling one and something that is understandably caught the attention of CBS Films.
However, the big questions that rises is whether they would be to do something that only a few studios have managed to do successfully.
A few days back, the studio announced that Scott Derrickson, specialist in the horror genre, has been signed on as the director of the film, while he will additionally work alongside C. Robert Cargill to write the screenplay for the film.
Derrickson has director some renowned films such as ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ and ‘Sinister,’ with the team for the latter including Cargill as well.
The American director is confident about the project and expects to bring an unforgettable experience to the silver screen.
“Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence,” Derrickson said in a statement. “By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one h**l of a movie. Cargill and I can't
wait to bring it to the big screen.”
The producer of ‘The Departed’ and ‘The Ring’ Roy Lee is also part of the team that will be working on the film adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
The challenge is indeed there for CBS Films and the team that it is bringing together, but there is nothing that a strong will and commitment cannot accomplish.
Fans of the franchise, however, are likely to be keeping their fingers crossed and their expectations low as they have seen some amazing video games being turned into dismal cinema experiences in the past and therefore do not want to end up getting disappointed.
