CC Mariners hold on for 2-1 win over nine-man Glory
Former Perth Glory striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-McBreen-c10016 came back to haunt his former employers at the Members Equity Stadium, as the visiting Central Coast Mariners recorded a 2-1 win over Perth Glory. Perth played more than half of the game with ten men, before ending
the game with nine players on the field.
McBreen, who scored five goals in just seven games for the Glory in the 2009-10 season, scored a first-half goal and earned a penalty for his side as the Mariners moved to second place in the Hyundai A-League standings. Having played an equal number of games,
CC Mariners are now three points clear of Adelaide United. Matt Simon also got his name on the score sheet and could’ve had a brace after he missed the penalty won by McBreen.
However, Perth showed a lot of steel as they tried to get back into the game, and they came close when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Todd-Howarth-c35187 pulled a goal back and reduced the deficit to 2-1. It was a fairly good performance by Perth Glory, who played much of the 90 minutes with
10 men, after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jamie-Harnwell-c17730 was sent off in the 29th minute. An early onslaught by the Mariners proved enough in the end, as they sealed a 2-1 win.
Perth Glory ended the game with nine men, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Adriano-Pellegrino-c3785 was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. The first half started at a very frantic pace and McBreen silenced the home fans, who were jeering at him, with a fantastic header in the
22nd minute. Simon then doubled the Mariners lead as he jabbed in a goal from close range.
The score should have been 3-nil in the 26th minute when McBreen was fouled in the box by his former Perth Glory team-mate http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tando-Velaphi-c34631 was well saved.
Perth Glory stalwart Jamie Harnwell was then shown a straight red card, after the burly defender elbowed Simon on the head. It looked as if the Mariners would make full use of their man advantage, but Perth Glory stood resolutely and showed a lot of determination,
as stuck to an attacking strategy rather than soaking up the pressure by sitting deep in their own half.
Then Perth got themselves back into the game. A great through ball from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mile-Sterjovski-c25850 and Todd Howarth scored from eight-yards to cut the deficit to 2-1 just before
half time.
The second half didn’t produce any goals but there were a host of chances for both teams. Perth Glory had the more clear-cut chances but failed to find the back of the net.
CC Mariners were playing their fourth game in 10 days and finally, fatigue started to show on the players, and Coach Graham Arnold noticed it. However, Arnold was very happy to see his side stand fast and not let in an equaliser. The ecstatic Mariners coach
said, "The boys came out of the gates extremely well and if the penalty's scored it's 3-0 and the game is dead and buried.”
Even in defeat, Glory Head Coach Ian Ferguson was proud of his team and praised their never say die attitude, even after going a man down so early in the game. He said, "Credit to the boys, we dug deep, we fought back and gave a credible performance."
