CC Sabathia shines as New York Yankees defeat Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees’ Carsten Charles Sabathia cracked the Tampa Bay Rays’ batting line-up and James Shields allowed a run on an error to help the Yankees take a 1-0 win of the three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, July 10.
CC Sabathia played his second full game and second-straight shut-out to take his 13th win of the season. The 30-year-old pitcher took nine batters, allowed just four hits and one walk over his spell of 113 pitches. His ballistic pitches held the
Rays under constant pressure and they kept on struggling to swing their bat throughout the innings.
"I was going to the Bahamas the whole time because I was pitching today," Sabathia said.
It was Sabathia’s 12th overall shut-out. The giant lefty has made 126 strike-outs and his record has improved to 13-4 with a 2.72 ERA.
The Yankees’ bat however was not in good shape to take advantage of such crushing pitches. They did not make even a single run until the seventh inning, when the Rays’ starter James Shields threw a ball to third baseman in an attempt to take Robinson Cano
but his throw went away from the Sean Rodriguez. It allowed Cano to score the only run of the game.
Shields immediately realised his mistake and threw in utter anguish. It was his first error of the season but it cost him his seventh loss of the season. With this loss, his record declined to 8-7 with 2.33 ERA in his 19 starts of the season.
"I had him picked off," Shields said. "He was walking down towards home plate. All I had to do was lob the ball over there and I ended up airmailing the play."
Besides this run, the 29-year-old right-handed pitcher was strong as he allowed just four hits and struck-out five batters over his 102 pitches.
After winning this series 2-1, the Yankees will now move back to their division to play eight games, four a piece at Toronto and the Tampa Bay Rays.
