CC Sabathia shines as New York Yankees defeat Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 – MLB Update
CC Sabathia was a sensation at the mound once again and helped the New York Yankees defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, July 16.
The Blue Jays had thumped the Yankees in the first two games where the Jays went on to score 16 runs in the first game and seven in the second. When the Yankees could find no answer to this onslaught, Sabathia stood up to the challenge. He did what he had
been doing all season and the result came out to be fruitful yet again.
The Blue Jays made a promising start to this game and scored from the very first inning of the game. Sabathia was quick to adjust his pitching and employed all the priceless experience he had. The next seven innings were a display of Sabathia at his best
as he just leaked one more hit in that span. This performance was enough to tie the Blue Jays in shackles.
He pitched for a total of eight innings and allowed just one run and three hits. He struck-out eight batters to take his strike-out tally to 134 for the season. It was Sabathia’s 14th win of the season taking his win-loss record to 14-4.
Sabathia’s opposite number Ricky Romero could not produce the magic at the mound which Sabathia did. His five innings were expensive as he ended up giving six hits and four runs to the Yankees. Although the relievers managed to halt the scoring thereon but
the four runs were enough for the Yankees to rout the Blue Jays.
Mariano Rivera came at the mound to close the game for the Yankees. He was high on confidence from the first-half followed by the All-Star selection and thus exhibited what he is renowned for, consistency. Rivera’s performance earned him his 23rd
save of the season.
Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones scored for the Yankees in the second inning before All-Star sensation Curtis Granderson scored the third run for the Yankees in the third inning. Derek Jeter continued to pile his tally of hits and helped Brett Gardner to add
the fourth Yankees’ run in the fourth inning.
Eduardo Nunez replaced the injured Alex Rodriguez on third base for the Yankees but could not make a similar impact. A-Rod will be back in almost four weeks and Nunez has to make his mark within this span to cement his spot somewhere in the starting line-up.
The Yankees have slipped a bit after losing the first two games of the series. They still have a chance to revive when they play the Blue Jays on Sunday, July 17. While Toronto will look to seal the victory on Sunday, the Yankees would go all-out to try
and level the series and come out unscathed.
