CD http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chivas-USA-c38798 made public the list of unprotected players on Tuesday for the 2011 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft.
Former Chivas skipper and now http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Montreal-Impact-c39946 head coach, Jesse Marsch, will be fishing out the best available in the draft to reinforce the Impact squad for the 2012 MLS campaign.
The Goats have retained their big guns like former New York Red Bulls striker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alejandro-Moreno-c4424 protected at The Home Depot Center. It was mostly the young talent that was made available for the draft. Among others, the players who
highlighted the list were Zarek Valentin, Victor Estupiñán, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Lahoud-c25322.
Valentin and Estupinan were picked in the 2011 SuperDraft while Gavin and Lahoud were drafted in 2010 and 2009, respectively.
It is a difficult decision for a team like the Rojiblancos, who have few experienced players in the roster. In addition, they can only protect a select-few designated players as per the MLS rules.
“You get 11 players that you have to protect and there are rules that you have to protect a certain number of foreign players and we did that,” general manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/José-c19246 Domene told the media. “At the end of the day, we protected, who we thought that we need.”
Moreover, a team also has to keep those players safe who might become a crucial part in other franchises.
“Like I've said, you play the odds,” he added. “You also want to keep guys that may have value for other teams so that they're not left unprotected. Unfortunately, you can't protect everybody, so it is what it is.”
Valentin had a bittersweet experience during his stint with the Chivas. He played 25 games for the Goats but could not make a strong statement during that time period. However, he received a call-up to the US U-23 Olympic camp this year.
Gavin has been fighting with recurring hamstring injuries since his recruitment in 2010 but showed flashes of potential in 18 appearances in two years.
Estupinan, who was eyeing Rookie of the Year award this year, could only play five games for the Goats.
The major disappointment was seeing Lahoud’s name in the list, who showcased his versatility in 2011 term in various position from left-back to attacking midfield but was left unprotected owing to the Goats' limited prowess.
The youngster would certainly be top priority for the Impact in the draft on Wednesday.
