CFC Genoa, Claudio Ranieri and AS Roma – Serie A Round 26 findings (Part 2)
Heartbreak for Claudio Ranieri
The 59-year-old tactician started his playing career with AS Roma almost 38 years ago. Sadly though, he wasn’t good enough for a club of Roma’s calibre. After spending the majority of his playing career with FC Catanzaro, Ranieri embarked on his managerial
career with Campania Puteolana being his first assignment.
The tinker man had a long and moderately successful managerial career where he coached the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 FC and Juventus FC before realising his dream with AS Roma in 2009. Luciano Spalleti had left AS Roma in turmoil and
Ranieri acted as the messiah. The Giallorossi had made a terrible start to their campaign but Ranieri weaved his motivational wand. Even though AS Roma eventually lost the Scudetto race to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan by a mere two points, Ranieri had truly made his mark
on La Maggica.
The 2010-11 season started rather poorly for Roma, as the Giallorossi failed to register a win until match day five. Ranieri’s Lupi recovered to some extent, but a 3-2 Champions League home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk coupled with shocking 4-3 away defeat
in Genoa – where http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 threw away a three-goal – proved the last straw. Shattered and heartbroken, Ranieri handed in his resignation.
Many believe Ranieri’s emotions got the better of him, and the tinker man really should have stayed. However, the tinker man had lost his charm. The dressing room was in disarray and the defence was in shambles. The decision was timely for Ranieri but it
leaves AS Roma in no man’s land. Even though Montella has made a winning start to his managerial career, albeit in a caretaker capacity, Roma will have to perform beyond their abilities if they are to salvage anything from this season.
CFC Genoa climbing up the league table
The Genoese club spent 36.4 million Euros last summer on transfers. Rafinha, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Miguel-Veloso-c25602 and Kevin Prince-Boateng were acquired from Schalke 04, Sporting Lisbon and Portsmouth FC respectively. However, Genoa chairman Enrico Preziosi believed Boateng was
incapable of breaking into the starting eleven, and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905 international was loaned out to AC Milan. Regardless of his departure, Genoa had an excellent squad capable of challenging for a European place. However, the Rossoblu had a disastrous first half
of the season.
Going into the winter break, Genoa were placed 14th in the league table, even though they were expected to challenge for a top seven spot. As a result Gian Piero Gasperini was given the boot after spending more than three years in charge of Il
Grifone. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lazio-c39775 tactician has managed to steady the ship to a considerable extent.
In 10 league outings since the winter break, Genoa have tasted defeat in only two games; against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/ACF-Fiorentina-c38209. Il Grifone have risen to 10th place in the Calcio charts, six points behind Juventus FC who occupy the last Europa
League berth. Genoa’s come-from-behind 4-3 victory against AS Roma proved their mental resilience and their fighting spirit. From being a fragile and brittle squad to a team that can mount a three goal deficit, the Rossoblu have come a long way. However, they
need to stay consistent in order to play European football next season.
