Example: Boat name on middle back of boat.

Hailing Port on bottom by swim platform on back of boat.

Yes the letters are 4" tall.

All I can find is that they need to be together.

The name would be approximately 2 1/2 feet above the hailing port is that OK as long as you can see them at the same time when looking at the stearn (back) of the boat.

  1. If your boat is for pleasure use only, you've pretty much filled what the Cost Guard wants in regards to vessel Documentation requirements.  The vessel name and the hailing port  ( include city and state ) just need to be clearly marked on the exterior of the hull  a minimum of 4" high. As long both are visible in the same section of the hull, it doesn't make too much difference how they're laid out.  What is more important is the hailing port and boat name match the information on the Certificate of Documentation that should be on board at all times, as well as having the official documentation number marked in 3" high numbers in the interior of your boat.
