CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IN A 2001 BUICK REGAL LS 3800?

Question

I know it can be a broad field of things, but my check engine light came on in my 2001 buick regal yesterday and I was wondering if anyone might know why. I checked all the fluid levels and everything seems fine. The car is not making any noise or smoking in anyway. I plan on taking the car in to have it looked at, but before I do, I would like to have a brief idea of what might be wrong.

yep easy you have autozone scan it for free and replace what they tell you.... could be many  so have it scan most good parts stores wil do it before the shop might be something you can do your self

Standard answer is check to see if the gas cap is on tightly. Other than that, you need to know the code to help solve the mystery.

Anything hooked up to the power control module can turn on the check engine light. And there's a long list of them. so you will have to take it and get the codes out of the PCM to see what the problem is. And I've changed alot of parts that autozone said were bad and didnt fix a thing. But they will scan it for free.

Check engine lights are related to emissions only, so you can limit your search to the areas that can have an affect on emissions.  Usually it is an oxygen sensor, could be a gas cap, or spark plugs or catalytic converter, or........

Although Autozone can catch a few simple things your GM dealer is equipped to find more complex issues such a fuel injection nozzles or fuel pump pressure. It could very well be the gas cap, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter or mass-air flow sensor.

For instance: My dad's Cadillac check engine light popped on and it had a broken motor mount.
