  1. lea5459 is incorrect.  In checkers, if you have a jump, you MUST use it.  Jumping is not an option, it is mandatory.

However, if more than one jumping opportunity opens up, you do NOT necessarily have to make the jump that captures the most men.   In other words, if you have a choice of a jump which will capture two men and a  jump that will capture one man, you can take the one-man jump if you want.

This is NOT just an online or computer rule, it's part of the rules of the game.

Indeed, part of the strategy is to force your opponent to make jumps that will weaken their position.

This, btw, is probably the most misunderstood rule of checkers.  It's also one of the reasons that a lot of people think checkers is a boring game, because they don't understand the actual rules and strategy.  But without the mandatory jumping rule, the game would be less interesting.

The reason that online checkers (and a good computer checkers game as well) will force you to jump is PRECISELY because it's a rule.  Why have an online (or computer software) version that doesn't play by the rules???  Makes no sense.

I just googled "checkers rules jumping", there are plenty of links to clarify that what I stated is true...

    Here's just one of them:

    http://www.darkfish.com/checkers/rules.h...

Here's another, from the American Checkers Federation web site:

    http://www.usacheckers.com/checkersinanu...

"...All jumps must be taken! There are no ifs, buts, or ands! (If a player has a choice of jumps, he may select any one he wishes, not necessarily that which gains the most pieces.).. "

Also, I believe that you do have to make the maximum number of possible jumps with whatever man you do choose to move... in other words, if you have :

      1) a choice of jumps, one of which can capture one man and the other can capture, for example, three men

      2) you can chose to make the one man capture, but:

      3) if you choose the three man capture, you must capture all three men..you can not stop after capturing just two of the three possible men

So I believe you do have to make the maximum number of jumps with whatever man you choose to move, but you do not necessarily have to move the man that can capture the most pieces (i.e. in the above scenario, you can take the one-man capture, ignoring the piece with the three-man capture, and  leave it at that).

  2. you don't have to jump over them

  3. Unfortunately it's true.  By the official rules if a piece can jump an opponents then that piece must jump.  If it can do multiple jumps then it must.  Official rules are the key words.

  4. Unfortunately the rules state that if you can jump you must. Furthermore, if you can make multiple jumps, you must also do that.

  5. Yes but  he cant make you move!!!!

  6. YES, YOU HAVE TO JUMP YOUR OPPONENT, OR YOUR OPPONENT WILL BLOW YOU FOR NOT JUMPING.

  7. Yes. This is a simple strategy to force the opponent into a greater jump of his or her own. For example, sacrificing one of your pieces to double jump.

  8. Yes, you have to jump by the rules

  9. if u can jump u have 2 otherwise yr opponent takes yr bead!!!!!!

  10. i firmly disagree with the first post, the only time thus occurs is when your playing online, it WILL make you jump, but if you are NOT playing online, you do not have to jump at all, it is called STRATEGY, which is an entire other concept.
