What is the oxidation number of manganese in the following:

1. Manganese (II) Hydroxide

2. Manganese (III) Hydroxide

3. Manganese Dioxide

4. Permanganate ion

5. Manganate ion

PLS. HELP!

  1. firstly you need to put these into their chemical formulae which overall has to equal 0

    Use the oxygen to calculate the oxidation number of manganese.  Each oxygen atom is -2. Generally each hydrogen atom is +1.

    1 = Mn(OH)2

    2 oxygen atoms make -4

    2 hydrogen atoms make +2

    that leaves you with -2 so to make the compound 0 you have to +2 and that is the oxidation number of manganese. I would do the others but i cant bothered and you'll never learn so good luck =D
