My first question is The average radius of a molecule of lysozyme, and enzyme in tears, is 1430 pm. What is its radius in nanometers (nm)? I have to set up a conversion equation thing and i'm so lost. It has to be something like 1430 pm x however many nms are in a pm or something! please help!

  1. divide by 1000. so your answer should be 1.430 nm.

  2. 1430,00,000000,00000,,00000,,,,,0000

  3. Alright, here is some help...

The idea is the following. Just like when someone asks you how many eyes are in two humans? And you answer four eyes total, you can answer the pm to nm question.

The way to set up this type of question is as follows:

We know we have two humans and each human has two eyes. So all you need is a conversion number: 2 eyes/human (or 2eyes:1human, 2eyes/1human). Then, we use this conversion number to figure out how many eyes in our desired number of humans (2 humans):

    2 humans (2 eyes/ 1 human) = 4 eyes total.

Notice that the units cancel the word human and you are left with eyes only... this is a very good check used in chemistry conversions. Basically humans * eyes / humans = eyes.

This same idea is what you should follow with your conversion from pm to nm. For this, I'm assuming that you mean picometers to nanometers. The conversion from picometers to nanometers is that there are .001 nanometers in 1 picometer. This gives .001 nm/pm.

    Thus, the setup is:

    1430pm (.001 nm/pm) = 1.43 nm.

Notice that the units cancel each other out pm * nm / pm = nm.

We could have gotten that result in a more complicated but more basic way (i.e. you don't need a conversion from pm to nm specifically... but you need a conversion from pm to meter and from meter to nm... this conversion is more common to find than the nm/pm conversion since it's based on the basic meter unit).

The way to set up is as follows, and this uses the same logic as above:

    1430 pm (1 meters / 10^12pm) (10^9 nm / 1 meter) = 1.43nm

Again, the units cancel: pm * (meter / pm) * (nm / meter) = nm.

  4. 1,000 pm = 1 nm, or 1 pm = 0.001 nm, so 1,430 pm = 1,430×0.001 = 1.430 nm

  5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanometer  nano meter 1×10−9 m

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picometre  pico meter 1×10−12 m

so to get from pico to nano we divide by 1000

    =1.430 nm

  6. Since 1pm = 0.001 nm, multiply 1430 by 0.001. (This is the same thing as dividing by 1000, since there are 1000 pm in 1 nm.) The resulting answer is 1.430 nm.
