  2. The term 'chow' for the dish you describe comes from a French word for 'cabbage.'

The term 'chow' for food in general comes from the railroad camps of the 19th century; often these employed Chinese cooks who would use whatever was handy.  They often referred to it as some form of 'chow' from a Chinese word meaning 'miscellaneous.'

  7. It's actually supposed to be "chow-chow". What you're describing sounds more like Chutney.

    This from Wiki:

Chow-chow is a relish made from a combination of different vegetables: cabbage, carrots, beans, asparagus, cauliflower, and peas which are pickled in a jar and served cold. The name is based on the French word chou for cabbage. Chow-chow is regionally associated with Pennsylvania and the southern United States, though the recipes vary greatly. Pennsylvania chow-chow, best known under the Wos-Wit brand, is generally much sweeter than the southern varieties. Chow-chow can be eaten by itself or can be used as a condiment on biscuits and gravy, pinto beans, hot dogs, hamburgers and other foods. Is is similar to and sometimes confused with piccalilli.

I'm pretty sure you've got chutney mixed up with chow-chow. Chutney is made with fruit; chow-chow isn't.

  8. The word "Chow" originated from the Orient.  China to be exactly.  The dish consist of Meat, Bean Sprouts with fried noodles on the side.  "Chow" is also a slang word used in the U.S and the U.S Military which means "food".  There is a brand name dog food called "Purina Dog Chow".

  9. Cabbage

  10. i have no idea how it came about but yay to the person who  invented chow hehehe
