  1. To be like a police officer or decetive just apply at the local office then if you are hired you will go to the academy and so on. Usually to be a city decetive you are a cop then become a decetive. It is like a promotion. Agents of The FBI or CIA are usually one of two kinds of people. Most are soliders that are coming to the end of their service years then the FBI or CIA contacts them and tests them to see if they are good for the job. The same is true for The Secret Sercive. Another part of FBI or CIA are cops who are asked to join and then tested. And then the highest members of the FBI and CIA are appointed by the president.

  2. Im planning on joining the CIA as an operations officer after Im done in the Army.  The Army and the Agency is my life.  This takes commitment.  It takes guts, bravery, you must have a passion for it.  This is the job Im taking in 3 years Cause I just Joined the Army.  Have a college degree and be sure you have some military experience.  FBI is only if your looking to arrest drug dealers or fire arms smugglers in the USA.  The CIA goes to wherever a threat to America is breaking out.  Plus other things they basically look after everything.  Just remember Some military experience is a plus and you should have knowlege of atleast one foreign language such as Russian(Im fluent),chinese, dari or korean. Here's a link for more details.  Remember this isnt secret agent James Bond your life will be in danger and your willing to do good for your country. Your looking at core collector/operations officer https://www.cia.gov/careers/jobs/view-al...

  3. Ok, you asked how to become a DETECTIVE in the US.  There are numerous Federal Agencies (FBI, ATFE, ICE, Secret Service, US Marshall) that have non-uniformed officers who are detective grade.

Most City, County, States also have Detectives.

For the Federal jobs, Bachelor degrees are almost always required (FBI, Secret Service require them) The FBI does NOT require you to have ANY military or law enforcement background before applying.

City, County or States May or May NOT require them depending on the department.

CIA is an entirely different game. They are an intelligence gathering entity with no arrest powers. A CIA Field Operator cannot arrest anyone.

Check with each agency for their qualifications. No two department or agencies will be the same.

  4. Of the three answers, only Lee P's shows even a little knowledge of the reality.

The CIA, of course, is not a police agency. They hire all sorts of degreed people, from political analysts to technical degrees, but they don't have a single "detective" on the payroll.

The FBI hires agent trainees who are degreed, accounting and law preferred, but computer science, linguistics, and other fields are of interest. They work all sorts of crime and have a very broad mission, so there are a lot of opportunities to specialize. It's government work for a very large organization, and a lot of agents don't make it a career and move on to other things where the Special Agent on the resume gives them an edge. It's a thing you can try, if you have a degree, an excellent academic record, spotless criminal history, reputation that will stand up to a deep background investigation, etc. But it's not something you can count on to get.

As for local law enforcement, you can't go down and be hired as a detective. You'd be useless. You do you time in patrol, learning to apply law, talk effectively with people, etc.  In a few years, when you qualify to apply for an open detective position, you try it.
