CIMB Classic 2012: Day 4 Round-Up
Sunday proved to be an eventful day for the fans. They saw few of the finest golfers of the world take the game to the next level.
On the last day, people saw Tiger Woods, Nick Watney and Bo Van Pelt unleash themselves for a final kill at the Mines Resort and Golf Club.
In the end, however, it was Nick Watney who dominated the entire field of the $6.1 million tournament. Nick Watney shot a brilliant round of 61 on Sunday to win the CIMB Classic.
It was a very sweet and memorable victory for the world number 16, as he also had the chance to flirt with golf’s magical number of 59.
"There were quite a few players in front of me, and I saw Tiger got off to a good start, so I wasn't really thinking about winning when I played off," Watney said.
"But the round sort of built momentum and things just kept getting better and better. I'm thrilled to have come away with a win".
The American had to birdie his last hole to achieve the amazing feat of registering a 59, but instead he had to settle for a bogey.
Nevertheless, it was enough for him to ward off the pressure of Tiger Woods and Bo Van Pelt.
Tiger Woods, on the other hand, missed the opportunity to win his fourth title of the year. The world number two shot an excellent round of 63 but it was not sufficient to grab the victory.
In fact, it was his third round performance that mainly did the damage for him. In the end, the fourteen-time major winner fell three shots behind the champion Nick Watney.
Robert Garrigus, on the other hand, continued to surprise everybody with his performance. Once again, the joint overnight leader shot a decent round of 66 but fell just one stroke short of the champion Nick Watney.
The defending champion Bo Van Pelt had the best chance to defend his crown at the CIMB Classic but he too missed that opportunity.
Van Pelt also shot a commanding round of 66 but he had to settle for a T2 finish.
In fact, Bo Van Pelt had the chance to force the game into a playoff but he missed the birdie on the eighteenth. His approach hit the bunker and he had to settle for a par in the end.
Thaworn Wiratchant on Thailand finished T16. The Thai number one shot 66 on Sunday to climb up nine positions on the leaderboard. It was the best performance by an Asian at the CIMB Classic.
