Question:

CISCO switch & networks question?

At work, we have two physically-separate networks: the "normal" network, and the admin net. For convenience sake, in one room of the workplace, it'd be useful to have 10 admin sockets. However, budget is running low, and as such, I end up having a CISCO switch for the two networks.

Would it be possible to program it to use ports 1-12 for one network, and 13-24 to another, without bridging the 2? And if so, how?

(The switch is a standard CISCO managed switch. Programs through the console port, as usual)

  3. Yes, this is possible on many Cisco devices (depending on the software installed).

You can set up Virtual LANs on the device, configuring the switch to place specific interfaces into whichever VLAN is appropriate.

Without more information on the physical network topology and the exact devices used it is hard to give more specific advice.  For instance, do they both require access to a router, if there is one.

In any case, running a VLAN on a Cisco switch is very much like having the LAN on a seperate device, because each VLAN is insulated from the network traffic of the others.  If you want the capability to exchange some traffic then routing will be needed.
