CISNET 3100 Slow

My desktop computer is very slow. I ras a programme to increase speed and identify problems. It has suggested to increase memory since Windows XP needs 512megs of memory and I have less then 500. I alos ran all kinds of optimization programs. What do you thinh and what kind of memory should I buy?
