Smooth muscles are largely involuntary (without your control) and perform  things like peristalsis, the process that squeezes food through the gut. Striated muscle is mostly skeletal (it makes you move) and voluntary (you control it). The other main type is cardiac muscle...the heart, definitely involuntary.
