CME Group Titleholders: Stacy Lewis ties for 16th in first round
American Stacy Lewis carded a 70 in the opening round of the CME Group Titleholders 2012 to grab the share of 16th position on the leaderboard.
Lewis, who is about to cap off the 2012 LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) season on a promising note as she has recorded four wins so far, started the season-ending tournament at
The TwinEagles Club, Florida in an impressive style.
The American star could not find a spot in the top 10, but a surprise comeback cannot be ruled out as she is eager to win the last tournament of the season as well.
She started the round with a clear plan, as she managed to avoid lousy strokes. She parred the first hole and sank her first birdie on the par-5 second.
On the fifth hole, Lewis tactfully handled the ball on the greens and drained a birdie-putt to increase her score on the leaderboard. Despite making a solid start to her campaign, the LPGA
titan fumbled on the par-3 8th, carding a bogey.
On the back nine, she lost several good chances to score, but a careful approach on some holes helped her keep on the safe side.
She launched a birdie on the 10th and an eagle on the 13th to further boost her position on the leaderboard. However, two back-to-back bogeys on the 15th and
16th hole marred her score.
Norwegian Suzann Pettersen got off to a fiery start at the four-day tournament, as she registered a 66 to grab an early lead along with two South Koreans Sun Young Yoo and So Yeon Ryu.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round on Thursday, Pettersen said that she is extremely happy after sharing a lead, and will try to keep the momentum going in the next three rounds.
“I was very happy with my start.  I grinded it out, it was a good 66 and we'll tee it up tomorrow morning,” said the Norwegian star who made a surprise comeback in the season after grabbing
two back-to-back titles.
So Yeon Ryu was also thrilled about her performance in the first round. “I had a couple of really great shots so I could have made a really tap‑in birdie, so that's why today I could hit really
great,” the South Korean golfer said.
