CME Group Titleholders: Sun Young Yoo
penalised for bad drop in second round
The second round of the CME Group Titleholders remained abuzz over South Korean Sun Young Yoo taking an unplayable lie on the 14th hole, which caused her to face a triple bogey.
Yoo, who got off to a strong start as she fired a 66 in the first round to take a share of early lead, crashed down to a tie for the third position, due largely to penalty for bad drop on
the par-5 14th.
Officials of the match informed Yoo that her arm position was not high enough to make her stroke acceptable under golf rules instructions.
Yoo was playing smoothly in the second round on Friday, as she shot two back-to-back birdies on the front nine.
However, after firing another two straight birdies on the 12th and 13th, she messed up her scorecard and saw a dip in her position.
She landed the ball in a bush on the 14th hole and failed to proceed, which led her to take an unplayable lie. Golf Channel footages later showed that the South Korean star did
not use her arm properly, as it was just below her shoulder height.
Having faced a double bogey on the 14th, which later turned into a triple, the LPGA star, however, did not stop trying. She sank another two consecutive birdies on the 16th
and 17th hole. However, a bogey on the last hole dampened her spirits once again.
Sharing her thoughts while speaking to the media about what happened on the back nine, Yoo said that she had no idea that she would face a penalty, as she did not hold her arm out intentionally.
But she said that she accepts her mistake.
She said that she was just keeping an eye on her stroke, which might have caused her to make a bad drop.
“They say my arm wasn't high enough. It was about like that height. If they ‑‑ they seen it on TV, so I take it as my mistake,” said the rising star who will now have to make extra efforts
to get into contention in the next two rounds.
“All I want to say is I didn't try to cheat or anything. I mean, I was busy taking a drop and I didn't really think about my arm's height”.
