T.B. Pickens plan to power cars with CNG will ONLY work in the warm climates of the U.S. such as southwest, southeast U.S.

CNG has a boiling point of 0c, 32F, any temperature lower than freezing CNG will not work.

His plan needs to change that cars in cold climates continue using gasoline, and only using CNG in the warmer climates

am I right or wrong?

  1. you're kidding, right?

you mean your gas stove doesn't work in the winter?

<<When natural gas is cooled to minus 259 degrees Fahrenheit (-161 degrees Celsius), it becomes a clear, colorless, odorless liquid.>>

ie  it boils at -259 degrees.

  2. not true CNG is compressed gas.  In cold climates you will have some exterior icing on the regulators and if installed wrong the regulator may be frozen closed.  But a little hot water will cure.

  3. Tell your theory to all the taxi drivers in Canada who use CNG to power their cabs all near round. No, the temperature needed to liquefy natural gas is -161C.

    So basically, you are wrong.

Even coming from an old Republican, I have to admit the Pickens Plan is a good idea.

  4. Sorry, you're wrong and chuckles has it right. I know because I own a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria that runs exclusively on natural gas, and it does fine in the winter. The coldest it has been here was -5 degrees. It did just fine. The only problem I have run across is when I refuel it when it's super cold out like that, sometimes it "spews" some when I take the filler off after refueling. Something in there doesn't seal perfectly every time. Maybe that 's due to the car and all its parts being almost 10 years old, I don't know. Otherwise, it's all good. And for 87 cents a gallon, I'll put up with a few faults now and then. It's a wonderful car and I'm blessed to have it!
