Question:

COBRA Coverage and Early Retirement?

Could some one point me in the direction of legislation or other information that answers this question:

If an employee retires at 62, is he/she eligible for 18 or 36 months of COBRA coverage?

I'm not sure how that works with Medicare kicking in at 65. Thank you for any thoughts. 10 points to best answer.

  1. I am sorry I can't help you.  I retired at 58...Paid $9,600 for Cobra for my 18 months...then had to go to private insurance....now I am 63 and paying $6,000 a year with a $5,000 deductible and only go see the Dr. every 3 mos. for a checkup.......Come on 65....I will watch your answers.  You need to really research this and call a lot of places for answers.  Of course if you are an illegal in this country...you just walk into an Emergency entrance at a hospital and get everything for free.....Sad.  "It is what is is."  Best of luck.  We all need it.

  2. Retirement would fall under one of the qualifying events, but the only way more than 18 months of COBRA can be used is for disability.
