Just wanted to know if there is abundance of people with this certification? I'm working as a claims adjuster, will this certification help me move into management?

  1. I wouldn't say abundance, but they're definately out there.  You tend to see more CPCU's in commercial underwriting departments of the larger carriers.

It will definately give you a leg up over someone who doesn't have it.

  2. Some companies (not many) require a CPCU to be in management.

It's a lot of work - and hard. So CPCU is not something that many people have.

But any type of education you can get to make yourself better will help you.

If you have not earned your Certificate in General Insurance (INS) and your Associates in Claims (AIC) - those are good places to start.  They are a good bit easier than CPCU and a great starting point.

If your company allows -- get involved in your local claims association. You will make contacts at other companies and with vendors. If you are an officer - it gives you a chance to get some leadership experience.

  3. I personally carry the AIC (associate in claims), ARM (risk management) AIM (management) and the SCLA (senior claim law associate) in addtion to the CPCU.  For practical technical knowledge, in my opinion, the SCLA is superior.  The AIC is an outstanding starting designation.  The CPCU is best described as a "masters in insurance" in that it is very broad in the areas of study.  The main advantage is that it is recognized by agents, claims people, underwriters, etc. as a mark of professional and ethical excellence.  If you do not have the AIC or SCLA, I would personally complete them first.  After that, the CPCU is certainly a worthwhile choice, in my opinion.
