  1. My answers follow AHA CPR guidelines for the lay rescuer (Heartsaver).  First let say what is the same:  Speed and ratios.  Now lets share what is different:  #1)  Depth of compressions is based on size of child but is deeper then most people practice.  1/3- 1/2 the depth of the chest.  .... so if the infant is 4 inches thick .. you should be aiming for nearly 2 inches...      #2)  If you are by yourself, continue with CPR for up to 2 minutes because your cpr may be more helpful then fancy medicines and shocking (AED) brought by EMS or Fire Dept.  #3)  Children go "Hypoxic" (lack of oxygen) for a variety or reasons including choking, SIDS, Respiratory disease, poisonings, medication overdoses, and trauma.  Immediate CPR with gentle small breaths is best for young children.   #4) Lastly, just give enough air for the chest to rise, not a large or rapid "Puff" ,  forceful breaths can injure lungs and cause more vomiting.  Rockford Ambulance teaches multiple monthly CPR and First classes in the Grand Rapids Area (MI).  You can find a local American Heart Association CPR Class by visiting their website. Thanks

  2. These answers will be based on the Emergency Cardiac Care standards set in 2005. The ECC is the group that sets the standards the Red Cross and Heart Association teach to. Details would vary by certifying organization.

Method: Hands on practice with a certified instructor and lots of repetition.

4 Differences: As of 2005, some of the differences went away- we used to do different compression rates and ratios, but no longer. The differences now include:

1- do not tilt head back as far

2- do not compress chest as much (1-1.5")

3- can use one or two hands

4- do not breath in as much

5- we do not check adult pulses in layperson CPR anymore, but do for children and infants

Lack of oxygen (different sources give different answers- which is why it is good to use your own book!):

    1- choking

    2- drowning

2 Rescuer: You could use a Bag-Valve Mask (if trained and had one), or do two-rescuer CPR, if trained (the technique for infant is a bit different).

Differ:Baby and adult- a breath every 3 seconds. Otherwise, only in how much air it takes.

  3. you can easily find the answers in your CPR book.
