My parents are going through a CPS Investigation because of my dad, and I was wondering if pushed comes to shove, is there any way if something goes bad in the investigation, can I keep my 16 yr. sister and my 2 yr. old brother? I'm 20 yrs. old and have my own apt. I know it's not a problem with my 18 yr. old brother since he is of age. But I have a one bedroom apt. with my fiance. Do you think it is possible? I can live without those kiddos... They are pracitcally with me every weekend.

Thanks

  1. If you went and got a little bit of a bigger apartment to accommodate them then you may be able to take the temporary custody until your dad takes care of his business to put the kids back at home with your parents. You can call the Children and Family Service department and ask for in detail the requirements of temporary custody so that they won't have to enter into the foster system.

  2. Fatgirl,

I am a FPS (Family Preservation Service) therapist and do contract work with CPS in WA St.

There are a couple of point that need to be made.

    1. Even though your brother is 18, if he's still in high school he will fall under CPS.

    2. You live in a one-bedroom. Most likely CPS will require you to have a larger place - with separate bedrooms for your sister and brothers, and you.

    3. They will require your fiance to go through a criminal background check (about two weeks). If he has any gross misdemeanors or felonies you will be denied.

Here is the key: Work WITH the CPS worker. If she knows you're being open, honest, and cooperative she will work with you.

My guess is more than likely they will be forcing your dad out of the house and keep the kids with your mom. But if your mom balks at that, be prepared to jump through hoops. Request FPS services immediately - we have resources ($$). FPS doesn't cost you a penney.

Oh, and if you or your fiance smoke - don't smoke in the house. Air it out and get rid of the odor as much as possible.

Good luck to you and your family.
