CROCHET - Can I do this stitch in crochet? &how?

The cable section (the middle.)

It looks so clean, like a regular chain all the way down.

Does anyone know how to crochet this!?

The part that looks like chains look like stitches where you would insert your hook around the stitch the row below you are working, then pull up a loop.  It's probably a smaller stitch with a loop pulled up.  The next row you would insert your hook around the loop you made the row below, pulling up another loop, and it starts looking like chains.  

    The hat is made in rounds starting starting at the crown.  So if you save the picture and are able to rotate it upside down, you would see it from the view it was crocheted (put on the head it is upside down from the direction it is made).  

    You could crochet chains over the top, inserting your hook in threads stitches, but I don't think it would look as nice or quite like on the hat.  The hat chains are made by using the row below of what is being worked.
