The only lake in SCOTLAND, the others are lochs (8)

M __ N __ R __ S __

For those who are going to say, Lake of Menteith, it won't fit in because i am pretty sure about the R and the S.

The 'R' comes from SaRdinia, answer for "Mediterranean island, capital Cagliari" (8) which is none but Sardinia,

and the 'S' for the clue "the setting of time one hour ahead of local standard time in summer (8-6) Daylight-'S'aving..

so I AM PRETTY SURE ABOUT THE "R" AND "S". I too agree the answer could have been Lake of Menteith, but that wont fit in, so there must be another lake??!!

HAS ANYBODY GOT AN ANSWER???

  1. I know that Montrose has a basin and not a lake, but the letters fit if nothing else.

  2. im sorry but i have checked google earth and the only freshwater lake it could find was menteith

    wow i just noticed something

if you move daylightsavings down so the 't' is in the slot it could be the 't' for menteiTh

  3. Montrose

I know this seems unlikely but Montrose is related to Menteith.

Perhaps the clue is either cryptic or a mistake.

"The story takes place during the Earl of Montrose's 1644-5 Highland campaign on behalf of King Charles I against the Covenanters who had sided with the English Parliament in the English Civil War. The main plot concerns a love triangle between Allan M'Aulay, his friend the Earl of Menteith, and Annot Lyle. Annot is a young woman who has been brought up by the M'Aulays since being captured as a girl during a blood feud against the MacEagh clan (also known as the Children of the Mist). M'Aulay and Menteith are both members of Montrose's army. Annot eventually marries Menteith after it is discovered that she has aristocratic blood, and was kidnapped by the MacEaghs as a baby. This leads to the jealous M'Aulay stabbing Menteith and then fleeing Montrose's army. Menteith survives whilst M'Aulay disappears and is rumoured to have been killed by the MacEaghs."

  4. The freshwater Lake of Menteith is the only natural body of water called a "lake" in Scotland. There are however, one or two other man-made "lakes"; Lake of the Hirsel, Pressmennan Lake, Smeaton, East Lothian.

There are also numerous lochs called "Water", particularly in the Northern Isles e.g. Roer Water on Shetland and Heldale Water on Orkney. These are not to be confused with named rivers, particularly in the South of Scotland e.g. Whiteadder Water and Blackadder Water

Only one natural body of water in Scotland is referred to as a lake, Lake of Menteith, because of a 19th century mistranslation of the Scots word laigh (English: low). At least three artificial bodies of water are also referred to as lakes.

Your other answers therefore must be wrong
