Question:

CRTs available that are DTV ready?

Does anyone know if they are still making CRTs? I'm really not interested in having what little TV I watch look completely "WOW" amazing for the price of the LCD and Plasma's. But, I also don't cherish the idea of having to have ANOTHER remote for watching television.

Between the DVD/VCR, stereo (for sound quality - lots of music videos viewers in the house), television remote, and all the cables and boxes, I've pretty much had it with electronics. NOW, I have to add another remote for the converter box, and we'll have four to be juggled. I'd love to just buy a DTV ready set and call it good, but I'm not interested in the $600+ price tag of LCDs and plasmas (and that's the small ones). We have a great JVC 27" set that doesn't need replacing, and I'd like the same size, but not at the prices they want for the larger screens.

So, any idea if I can still get a good, yet not bank breaking, television. Or will I have to wait for the switch to be over and the money grab to stop?

  1. Noone makes a crt hdtv anymore. They did a few years ago but stopped due to consumer demand. Most people want a thin tv. Believe it or not, the crt tvs looked better than LCD and as good if not better than plasmas. People just didn't want to buy a small, heavy tv when they could get a thin light one for around the same price. You may be able to find a used one in the want ads or on criagslist though.

Universal remotes are cheap and can be setup to run all your electronics. That would be the best way to get rid of all the clutter.

  2. There are still some CRT TVs available at places like Circuit City and Best Buy. Most should have digital tuners, and some can even display 1080i pictures. This isn't "true" HD, but it's what the HD packages through cable and satellite run, so you'd see an improvement in your picture quality. If you upgraded, you'd also have to get better cables (component or HDMI).
