CSA board passes vote of no-confidence against Mtutuzeli Nyoka
Cricket South Africa has fired its president Mtutuzeli Nyoka after passing a vote of no-confidence against him at the Board’s special general meeting on Saturday.
The move was not unanimous but in fact, a majority of the officials present in the meeting voted against the president and Nyoka’s position was terminated with immediate effect.
“With immediate effect, the position of Dr M. Nyoka as president of Cricket South Africa is terminated,” the federation stated on its official website on Saturday.
Nyoka’s dismissal is the culmination of an ongoing row between him and the CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, which reached its climax during the bonus scandal. Nyoka was favouring an external probe into the 4.7 million South African
rands (US$ 671,428) which Majola and 39 other board officials had received after the 2009 Indian Premier League and the Champions Trophy.
Cricket South Africa initially announced that they would set an external commission to look into the situation but later the investigation was carried out internally and Majola was cleared of all transgression charges. The terminated
CSA president said he accepted the findings of internal commission.
The findings of the commission were made public two months later and Nyoka was served with a written notice of a move of no-confidence against him. The motion was signed by all the 11 Cricket South Africa affiliate presidents.
The sports ministry of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 felt that the conflict might negatively impact the performance of team in the World Cup and the country’s sports minister Fikile Mbalula intervened into the issue.
Mbalula met with the Board members except Nyoka, as he was not available, and assured the cricket fans that game’s fraternity would not be affected by the conflict. The sports minister also announced that the Board would again meet
on 12 February to discuss the report of the internal commission.
The board met on Saturday and once again Nyoka opted not to attend the meeting on the advice of his lawyers and the motion of no-confidence was passed against him.
Vice-president AK Khan will take over as acting President until elections in August 2011.
The South African captain, Graeme Smith was also involved in the dispute but he was warned by Mbalula to stay out of administrative issues and focus on game after he reportedly supported Majola.
