CSA pays tribute to ‘passionate’ Curran – Cricket News Update
Cricket South Africa on Thursday paid rich tribute to the former Zimbabwe cricketer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kevin-Malcolm-Curran-c71159, who died yesterday, October 10, 2012, aged 53.
Curran, a former Zimbabwe national coach, was in Mutare with his current team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mashonaland-Eagles-c814, where he collapsed on Wednesday morning while running, Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed yesterday.
The promising all-rounder, who played 11 ODIs for Zimbabwe, had brief first class stints with South African cricket franchises KwaZulu-Natal and Boland. Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 Cricket, but for the entire cricket fraternity.
“It is very sad news,” said the CSA CEO Jacques Faul on Thursday. “He’s well remembered for his brief playing stint in this country for KwaZulu-Natal and Boland, where he always played the game to the best professional standards.”
“His biggest contribution to cricket in Southern Africa has, however, come in huge contribution he has made to returning the Zimbabwe first-class game back to strength,” he added further.
Curran made his international cricket debut during the 1983 Cricket World Cup, against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, and played 11 ODIs for his country scoring 287 runs and picking up nine wickets.
After bidding farewell to international cricket in 1987, Curran had headed to England where he played for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824, before quitting professional cricket in 1999. In his 324 First class appearances, Curran scored 15740 runs at 36.86 and took 605 wickets.
After retiring from professional cricket, Curran started coaching sides. He was also involved in various administrative roles. At the time of death, he was the coach of Zimbabwe franchise Mashonaland Eagles, and was also member of national selection panel.
Former English players posted condolence messages on micro-blogging website Twitter.
"Thoughts are with his close Family. A wonderful cricketer who would have flourished In the modern era of T20," former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Paul-Vaughan-c76145 tweeted.
