CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce Ulker win: Euroleague Basketball Roundup November 16 – Part 1
Five games took place in the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season on November 16, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
CSKA Moscow 77 – Unicaja 66
CSKA Moscow became the first team of this year’s Euroleague to record five consecutive victories with a 77-66 win over Unicaja in Group B game at the Universal Sports Hall. Unicaja’s defeat meanwhile snapped their three game winning
streak, taking them down to 3-2 in the group.
Former Euroleague MVP Milos Teodosic topped all scorers with 19 points and dished out four assists in the victory. Andrei Kirilenko had a strong all-around game with 17 points, nine rebounds, six steals, three blocks and two assists
while Nenad Krstic had 12 points and seven rebounds. Alexey Shved also ended the night with 10 points and three assists.
For Unicaja, Joel Freeland added a team-high 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and stole the ball twice. Kristaps Valters and Tremmell Darden racked up 13 points apiece while E.J. Rowland totalled 12 points and three steals.
The first quarter witnessed a tight contest and the Russians barely managed to take a 14-12 lead. CSKA however put the foot on the paddle in the second quarter and outscored Unicaja 22-15 for a 34-29 lead at halftime. CSKA continued
dominated in the second half and limited Unicaja to 12 points, stretching their lead to 62-41 after three.
Unicaja opened the fourth on a 15-2 run to cut the margin to eight, with four minutes remaining. However, Moscow scored the next four points to push their lead back to double figures and did not look back after that.
Fenerbahce Ulker 85 - Bennet Cantu 83
Six players scored in double figures as Fenerbahce Ulker edged past Bennet Cantu 85-83 for their third straight victory in Istanbul, Turkey. Both teams of Group A are now tied at 3-2 in the upper half of their group.
Omer Onan punctuated a game-high 18 points on 5 for 9 shooting from two-point range and a perfect 5 for 5 from free throw line while Thabo Sefolosha contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Oguz Savas added 13 points
while Bojan Bogdanovic and Roko Ukic tallied 12 points each for Ulker.
Gianluca Basile and Nicolas Mazzarino led the visiting team with 12 points apiece while Maarten Leunen and Denis Marconato finished with 11 points each.
In a tightly contested first half of the game, Cantu took a three-point lead, 35-32. Ulker however outplayed Bennet 24-17 in the third quarter and converted the halftime deficit into a 56-52 lead after three.
Bennet kept on pushing though and trailed by 73-70 with few seconds to go in the fourth quarter. This was when Nicolas Mazzarino nailed a three to tie the game at 73 and take it overtime. Ulker got off to a good start in the overtime
and held an 82-77 with one minute to go. Markoishvili hit a three-pointer to trim the deficit to two but Roko Ukic pinned three consecutive free throws to make it 85-80 and seal the game.
