CSKA Moscow and Panathinaikos win: Euroleague Basketball Roundup October 26 Review
Four games took place in Turkish Airlines Euroleague on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Here is a brief review of these games:
CSKA Moscow 94 - Brose Baskets 74
At the Universal Sports Hall, the CSKA Moscow cruised past Brose Baskets 94-74 for their second straight victory of the Euroleague season 2011-12.
Nenad Krstic scored a game-high 19 points on a perfect 9 for 9 shooting from two-point range, grabbed four rebounds and stole the ball twice to lead the way for the Russians. Andrey Vorontsevich racked up 13 points, clutched five rebounds and handed out three assists while Andrei Kirilenko had 12 points, six assists and four rebounds for CSKA.
Tibor Pleiss led Brose s with 17 points on a 9 for 10 shooting from free throw line while Julius Jenkins ended with 15 points and three assists. PJ Tucker also contributed 10 points and six rebounds in Brose’s first defeat of the season.
Moscow opened the first quarter on a 7-0 run and held a ten-point lead, 24-14, after one. CSKA maintained the tempo in the second period, outscoring the visiting team 23-16 to stretch their lead to 17, 47-30, at halftime. From there on it was cruise for the Russians.
Panathinaikos 81 - KK Zagreb 62
The reigning Euroleague champion Panathinaikos won their second consecutive game of this season with an 81-62 victory over KK Zagreb at the Zagreb Arena. It was second straight loss for the Croatian outfit.
Romain Sato paced Panathinaikos with 13 points and seven rebounds while Nick Calathes and Steven Smith chipped in with 12 points apiece. Mike Batiste also had 10 points while last season’s MVP Dimitris Diamantidis dealt out eight assists on the night.
Panathinaikos shot 54 percent (27 for 50) from two-point range and limited KK to 48.4 percent (16 for 33). The Greens also committed just 13 turnovers as compared to 21 by Zagreb.
Zagreb’s Sean May topped all scorers with 23 points on 7 for 8 shooting from the free throw line and pulled down nine rebounds. Damir Mulaomerovic also totalled 15 points in less than 36 minutes.
Panathinaikos were in their groove from the tip off and on the back of some all round offensive display; they burst into the second quarter with a 24-14 lead. The Greens started second period from where they left off in the first and outplayed the hosts 21-8, stretching their lead to 23 points, 45-22, at intermission. Third quarter brought more misery for the hosts, who made some quick shots late in the fourth period to end under a 20 point deficit.
