Zenit St. Petersburg moved one step closer to retaining the Russian Premier League title, after winning the latest league game 2-0 against CSKA Moscow at Petrovsky stadium.
As a result, the Koni dropped down to the fourth spot on the league table, and now risk losing out on UEFA Champions League football next season. However, the Armeytsy trail the second spot by just 2 points.
In the aftermath of the outcome, the St. Petersburg club goalkeeper, Vyacheslav Malafeev, has hailed the Moscow-based club and tipped them to reclaim the second-spot on the league table.
There’s little arguing that CSKA earned themselves huge respect while playing in Europe over the years. They managed to win the UEFA Cup back in 2004 after defeating Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in Portugal.
The 2009/10 Champions League campaign saw them reach the quarter-finals after defeating Sevilla in the round-of-16. More recently, CSKA made the headlines after drawing the first leg of their pre-quarter-final 1-1 at home against
Real Madrid.
Though they were drawn in a difficult group this term, CSKA managed to book their place in the round-of-16 after claiming a hard fought draw against French champions, Lille, and a memorable win against the Italian giants, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567
Milan, at San Siro.
Speaking on Igor Akinfeev, Malafeev expressed his delight to see the 26-year-old back in action after spending nearly six months on the sidelines. Malafeev went on to praise Akinfeev, admitting that the Russian national team goalkeeper
is the best in business.
“Of course, I'm glad that Igor is back on the field. Now I want to wish him and his team http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Good-Luck-c39444 in the remaining matches. I think CSKA have a very strong team, which should play in the Champions League.” The Russian Cup winner
was quoted as saying.
Malafeev revealed that the Moscow-based club have played decent football in Europe over the years and now is the time to prove their superiority over their counterparts. He urged the fans to get behind their team and motivated
CSKA to reclaim the European spot.
