CSKA Moscow had taken a seven points lead until the 23rd round of the ongoing Russian Premier League campaign. However, the Moscow-based club struggled to retain the advantage after drawing the next two league meetings
against Dynamo Moscow and Spartak Moscow respectively.
The defending league champions, Zenit St. Petersburg, took advantage of the situation and closed down the gap from the top spot following their back-to-back wins against Lokomotiv Moscow and FC Krasnodar respectively.
As things stand, the St. Petersburg club is just four points behind the Moscow-based club. And with just five games remaining until the end of the domestic championship, they are in contention to retain the league title should
CSKA drop more points on the table.
The Armeytsy head coach, Leonid Slutsky, has urged his side to find consistency in their performances after insisting that they have to work and night to steal the league title from Luciano Spalletti’s men.
“We have to win four games to confirm our title credentials. We were unfortunate to drop points against tough teams. We surpassed the two heaviest derbies, the outcome of which has always been unpredictable.”
“In each subsequent meeting, we must and we will play to win. What will happen after that is another question.” The Russian Cup winner was quoted as saying.
Slutsky went on to talk about Sergei Semak, who has made up his mind to hang up his boots at the end of the season. The Russian tactician said that he will welcome the prospect of signing the talismanic midfielder should he decides
to change his mind.
“When Semak was playing at Rubin, we held negotiations with his agent but things did not go in our favor. I have always liked him. I can assure him first team football in almost every ga,e if he decided to prolong his playing career.”
He concluded.
The 37-year-old Russian International managed to win two league titles and a Russian cup during his stay at Petrovsky stadium.
