  1. Centralized Traffic Control.

    It is a method of operation wherein trains are governed and authorized by signal indication, from a central point, where dual control switches, as well as controlled signals can be operated by the train dispatcher from a remote location.

    By way of example, the Harriman Dispatching Center in Omaha is where the Union Pacific's train dispatchers are located and from which point all CTC dispatching takes place.

    Commands sent to controlled signals and switches are carried either by "code line" or, in more modern systems, microwave transmission.

    It has its own set of operating rules, as each type of territory does.

    More often than not, there is one main line used from point A to point B, with sidings every few miles so that trains can meet or pass one another.  The access in and out of sidings and the signals governing those movements are determined by the dispatcher.  The switches and signals involved are called "control points," identified by number.
