CV too good to be true?

Nobody hires me to work part-time in Lichfield UK (I canot do full-time, I am still a student). Could it be because I am overqualified? (I have a BA hons, an MA, I am doing my final PhD year, and I speak several foreign languages). Could it be that my CV sounds too good to be true? My expences are running and I keep applying for part-time jobs, in shops, banks, reception and admin, etc... but no luck yet...

  1. Middle-age and higher education do not mix well with part-time work. I know this because that's what I've discovered. I worked 15 years as a high tech engineer. High tech collapsed in 2001 and in mid-2003 I was laid off. My money ran out in 2004 so I looked for alternate work, including part-time. Employers don't hired middled-aged engineers for part-time work or new careers. They're took concerned you'll bolt back to your original work once jobs return there. Doens't matter that high tech hasn't rebounded in 7 years and has no sign it will for another 7 years. They hire who they believe will stay at the job (less educated, younger persons.)

    Sorry but that's the reality.

  2. Yes, they probably feel you are overqualified, and that you wouldn't stay in the position long if hired.  Have you investigated internships and/or jobs as a teaching assistant at your university?  Many universities have career centers where they help students w/employment, internships, and even volunteer work that will help in the students'  future careers.  Good luck.
