CWG: Canada has record setting day in Delhi
Two Commonwealth Games records were broken by Canadians on Wednesday in Delhi, and a world record was set by another. Sultana Frizell won gold in the women’s hammer throw, and Dylan Armstong won gold in the men’s shot put while Kyle Pettey set a new world
record in the Paralympics shot put.
Frizell recorded a distance of 68.57m in the hammer throw, besting the previous Commonwealth Games mark of 67.90. It was the 25-year-old’s first major Games victory.
“I missed out on Melbourne (in 2006) because I had obligations in the NCAA and sat at home going 'I want to be there so badly,'” Frizell said. "I finally made it to this one and I was able to go out and do a Games record, this is what I was preparing for
all season.”
Taking second was Parry Carya of Wales, who was nowhere near the Canadian with a throw of 64.93m. In third for England was Zoe Derham with a throw of 64.04m.
Armstrong, who finished fourth in the shot put at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, reached a distance of 21.02m. The previous Commonwealth best was 20.91m. The world record is 23.12m.
Both Armstrong and Frizell are coached by Anatoliy Bondarchuk in the Kamloops throws program.
“Pretty good day for a little club in Kamloops,” Armstrong said. “Over 21 metres, I'm pretty happy with that, especially this late in the season, it's been a long season. It's been long, but that medal was long overdue.”
Dorlan Amand Scott won the silver for Jamaica in the shot put with a throw of 20.19m, and winning bronze for Australia was Sale Stevenson with a personal best throw of 19.99m.
Pettey, 2008 Beijing Paralympics bronze medallist, made a throw of 11.44m in the shot put, breaking his previous record of 11.24m.
"I feel awesome," Pettey said. "My first three throws were not what I would have hoped for but I reloaded and (coach) Dave Greig pushed me really hard. It's my first major win. I have come second and third at other events and now it's all come together in
a major Games."
Daniel James West won silver with a throw of 10.78m for England, and Hamish MacDonald won bronze for Australia with a throw of 9.92m.
Canada ended day four of the Commonwealth Games with 24 medals, 11 of them gold. They currently sit in fourth place in the medals standings. Topping the medals standings is Australia with 70 medals, 33 of them gold. India is currently second with 34 medals,
14 of them gold, and England holds third with 12 gold medals and 46 in total.
