CWG Tennis-Breaking News: Somdev Devvarman breezes into singles final
The top seed Indian, Somdev Devvarman has assured his side at least a silver medal in the tennis event of the ongoing Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games by cruising into men’s singles final with a two setter victory over Matthew Ebden of Australia
at New Delhi's R K Khanna Tennis Stadium on Friday. The final match score was 6-3 6-1.
The world no. 97 Devvarman outclassed his third seed foe Matthew with the help of his superior game in straight sets as the clash concluded in one hour and eleven minutes.
The 25-year-old Indian, who turned professional in 2008, had last played this season at the Wimbledon doubles competition along with his partner, Treat Huey where they suffered defeat at the hands of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam ul Haq Qureshi
in four sets.
The right-handed player jumped to his career high ranking of world no. 96 back in August this season. The Assam-born, as a result of today’s victory, will now next take on another Australian as the second semi-final clash on Friday is an
all Australian battle between Greg Jones and Peter Luczak, seeded number five and two respectively.
Unlike the previous clashes, today’s first semi-final clash also highlighted lengthy rallies however, the Indian had strong enough legs and mental strength to get past his foe in the end. Matthew came into this battle after having played
an exciting three-setter match versus Joshua Goodall of Britain and probably hadn't recovered completely from that gruelling battle.
The match looked in Somdev’s favour ever since Ebden missed his serve in the opening. The Australian tried to make a comeback but Somdev immediately tightened his grip over the battle. He broke Matthew on two occasions. Somdev is also in
contention for the doubles as he will contest the men’s doubles final four battle while pairing up with Rohan Bopanna later in the day.
