Cab someone explain to me the diff bewt DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-R DL and CD audio, and all the others??

im about to buy an external dvd burner and i do not know which dvds i should buy between the ones i have listed above, not sure about the 1, and 2nd layer format? what does that mean? and which kind of players would you recommend for me to play all these dvds ive just burned?? thanks in advance for all the advice, ciao
