  1. The Moulin Rouge is ridiculously expensive show that has more to do with Vegas than France.  For something completely different, there's the Lapin Agile tucked away behind Montmartre.

It's a very intimate and friendly atmosphere.  Despite the international audience, they play *only* old and traditional French songs...  it's hard to sing along if you don't speak any French, but that didn't stop many from trying.  It's a distinctly odd, but special experience that *most* of my guests to France have enjoyed.

  2. There are several cabarets in Paris and the rest of France but I need to warn you that a cabaret is a french term used loosely for a nightclub where people sit, drink, eat and watch some sort of show.  it can be variety, comedy, music or, the point of my explanation, adult entertainment.   So when you are looking, make sure you know what kind of entertainment is being offered.  The Moulin Rouge is rather unique in that it has a good variety and they are used to having foreigners there.  Unfortunately, I don't remember the few places I went to but, if you are in a hotel, they can point you to something that fits your needs.

  3. I second tinfoiled's answer. The Moulin Rouge is an overpriced Vegas show.

The same is true of most of widely advertised shows such as the Lido and the Crazy Horse.

As he already mentioned the show at the Lapin Agile is in another category altogther. http://www.au-lapin-agile.com/

Another choice is my favorite hangout, Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galand in the 5th arrondissment. The Caberet in the basement is straight out of the 1950's with a wide variety of acts. It is all but unknown to tourists and a very authentic Paris experience.
