Newcastle United star midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yohan-Cabaye-c37423 has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur during the summer.
The France international midfielder has been impressive ever since he made his move to Tyneside in 2011 from former French champions Lille. His performances for the Magpies led to his first ever international call-up.
The player was selected in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899’s Euro 2012 squad, and was perhaps one of the best players in the tournament. His eye-catching displays attracted the interest of many clubs, including English giants Manchester United.
Newcastle were aware of the fact that there were a number of clubs trying to land their player, and made sure he stayed with them for the season. Having been one of their most consistent and effective players, Newcastle were not willing to part ways with
Cabaye.
Tottenham Hotspur were at that moment trying to sort out a midfielder situation themselves. The club was planning on finally selling their star midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857, who was strongly linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Having finalised a
deal towards the end of the transfer window, Tottenham started looking for a replacement, with Porto’s Joao Moutinho the most likely candidate.
Cabaye recently revealed that the club also approached him during the summer, but said that he turned them down because he felt he was not ‘meant to leave’ Newcastle.
"The offer from Tottenham was to replace Modric," he told French media.
"If I had wanted to leave I would have; I have not left, I was not meant to leave as I am still here and I hope a lot of good things will come out of it.”
Newcastle finished below Tottenham by just one point last season, but had an overall better campaign where they defied expectations and managed impressive victories against the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Manchester United.
Cabaye insists that he is fully focused on Newcastle, and would like to win silverware with the club.
"For me the Premier League is the best league in the world, you have to work twice as hard and we know about the high tempo in every match,” he added.
“This is what attracted me and I will develop physically."
