Question:

Cabel modem and Comcast?

I am looking into buying D-Link Broadband Cable Modem ( DCM-202). But the Comcast cable here in MD is telling me that I would still need to rent the cable modem from them even if I have D-Link Broadband Cable Modem (DCM-202). I am trying to save $3/month rent that Comcast would charge me.

Any comments/suggestions? Thanks.

  1. You don't have to rent the cable modem from them. All they need is the MAC address of your new cable modem.

  2. I believe you dont need to rent their modem.  Just register your purchased modem by calling their toll free number.  You may try calling them again.  Sometimes agents of service providers doesn't know everything.  They would need to sound confident so you will trust them.  But it would be a good idea to call again just to confirm.
