Hi All. As a career option i was thinking of cabin crew.

I really like planes and thinking of sleeping somewhere different in the world sounds exciting.

there are some things that put me off though.

cabin crew is very stereotypical for homosexuals. i have nothing against g*y people its just that would I be labelled one?

also what is the pay like?

  1. Bit dodgy mate. Being cabin crew on it's own doesn't mean you are g*y.

However if you like musicals, drive a Mazda MX5, have a collection of Judy Garland CDs and are thinking of growing a moustache then it's going to be more than just a stereotype.

  2. From an airline pilot's perspective...

Many pilots assume that a male flight attendant is g*y (I didn't).  It's an unfortunate stereotype, and one that's not true at all as there are plenty of heterosexual male flight attendants out there.  It's not that pilots will not like you or refuse to have lunch/dinner with you on overnights.  In fact, they probably won't even care one way or the other, but they will assume you are g*y.  Don't let that stop you from going down that career path.  If you like that line of work, go for it.

I once flew with a male flight attendant who would introduce himself like "Hi, I'm Joe, nice to meet you, I'm not g*y".  Pretty funny guy.

Pay sucks as a flight attendant.  You can, however, make an okay living at a major airline.

  3. Being a Flight Attendant does not mean you swing one way or another.  In fact from the stories I hear, there are plenty of perks in the life of  male FAs (flight attendants) no matter their orientation.  (Further details reserved for a less public forum)  Who are you concerned about receiving a "label" from.  The people in your life who's opinions matter to you, should know you well enough without the need to assign labels.  For all the rest who have to assign "labels" because they do not know who you are, what do you really care about their opinion anyways?

As far as pay, this link is a bit old, but will give you an idea

Regional airlines will pay less than this.

Also please know that regional, major, and charter airlines all hire with no prior FA experience, so there is no reason to make less money at a regional when you can go straight to major or charter.  I once had the FA hiring manager at a regional airline tell me that he would not accept applications from anyone with prior FA experience, because the applicant's expectations would be to high (ie even the hiring manager knows that a regional airline FA job is pretty dumpy)
