I just contacted my cable TV company and they said I could rent a dvd recorder for $15 a month. How much would it cost me to just buy one ? wouldn't it make more sense to by a dvd recorder or are they really expensive ?? thanks

  1. Your cable TV provider charges you for the DVR *service*, but gives you the actual *equipment* for free.  But you can cancel at any time.

Other DVR companies like Tivo or DirecTV charge you a smaller monthly fee for service, but also charge you for the equipment as well.  You're also trapped into a commitment of 2-3 years for most plans.  They tend to offer more fancy features.

So you'll have to crunch the numbers to figure out which is worth it to you - do you mind the commitment?  How many months/years will you have to keep with one company to make it worth it?

  2. Dump your cable company and get Directv. Rental is only $5.99 per month. The upfront cost is $99 I believe.
