Cable modem for dial up?

i guess some random lightning fried my modem or something because it can't detect a dial tone (and yes i've tried everything to try to fix it) and it'll be a couple of weeks before i can get another one (btw, ive seen the ones on walmart.com for really cheap...will they do the job ?...never had to buy a modem before) anyway until then i have an old cable modem laying around and was wondering if i could run my dial up through that if it would work until i buy a new modem? i know its probably a silly question but i really dont know much about the technical aspects of a computer

  1. No, it's completely different.  They don't even have the same connections.

That said, any dial-up modem should work.  If you don't feel comfortable opening your computer you can get a USB modem that just plugs in.

I don't like WalMart because I had a bad experience with defective stuff they didn't want to exchange but it shouldn't matter where you get it - it will work the same.
