Cable modem restarting?

Ive had this motorola surfboard cable modem through two computers (total of maybe 8 years) and it keeps restarting and then works and then restarts every single day, even when im offline! Not to mention during this post it restarted 3 times! All the lights turn off starting with activity then online, send, receive, and then the power light blinks and the lights all go back on in the reverse order? Is this a broken modem with age, virus, spyware? Im also renting this from my internet provider so should i ask for a new one with a look at my current modem? Also when i get my computer to locate the problem it says my modem is the problem.

One of two things, the power plug is loose, or the power adapter is bad!  Go get another modem since your provider is renting it to you!  Its the easy fix.

(add: it could also be an internal short so make that three things)
